Islamic Help UK provides emergency food assistance to 76,930 persons in Mareb and Shabwah governorates

 

In response to the waves of displacement as a result of the ongoing conflict and the flood disaster in the Mareb, Islamic Help UK launched the Emergency Food Assistance Project in Mareb & Shabwah  funded by the Islamic Development Bank During the Holy Ramdan, which aims at distribution food baskets to 10,990 vulnerable and displaced families (76,930 persons).

The food baskets distributed consists of a flour bag, sugar bag, rice bag, sauce, oil, legumes, pasta, tea, milk, dates in Wadi and Medina districts in Marib and the Ataq and Beihan districts in Shabwa.

During the inauguration, the Deputy Governor of Marib Mr. Abdullah Ahmad Al Bakri praised the project, which is implemented by the Islamic Help UK, and funded by the Islamic Bank for development, hoping that it would be the beginning of an effective role for the Islamic Help in the governorate.

The acting Director of the office Planning and International Cooperation in Mareb also thanked the Islamic Help and the Islamic Development Bank for this timely food assistance and coordination with the line authorities. He also praised the arrangements organized by Islamic Help to reduce the spread of the Corona epidemic among the beneficiaries.

The coordinator of the Islamic Help in Marib, Mr. Abdullah Abdul Qadir Kreif, said that this humanitarian initiative was launched in coordination with the Executive Unit of IDPs, comes in cotext of targeting of 10,990 households in Marib and Shabwa governorates, in this project funded by the Islamic Development Bank.

He stressed that Islamic Help is planning to implement other humanitarian interventions in the upcoming days, to alleviate the suffering of the IDPs and those affected by floods and other disasters.

Islamic Help has completed winter assistance project 19-20, which started at the end of 2019, targeting 5,200 individuals among to the ultra-poor, marginalized and IDPs households, as well as laborers in cleaning in Taiz Governorate (southwest of Yemen).

 

The assistance provided included the areas of "Bani Shaiba Al Gharb", Al-Dar Aljadid IDPs Camp for the, Dhahra IDPs camp, Al-Qahfa, Al-Safia, Aturbah Town in the Shamaytin district, in addition to the areas of Thubat and Hasanat in the Salah district of Taiz Governorate.

 

The distributed winter materials contained hundreds of food packages, blankets, winter shoes and clothes for schoolchildren and various winter clothing vouchers for the IDPs, the poorest and the marginalized, and 4,000 liters of household gas.

 

The beneficiaries, in turn, expressed their thanks for the humanitarian efforts made by Islamic Help to support them and alleviate their suffering through the support they provide to the Yemeni people.

 

Dr. Jamal Al-Haddi, the country director of the Islamic Help, confirmed that the organization has implemented many relief projects that included health, food, shelter and social activities during the past months targeting tens of thousands of the most vulnerable families, stressing that during the coming periods, other relief and humanitarian projects and programs will be implemented for needy and poor families in Yemen's governorates.

 

Al-Haddi thanked the donors (Islamic Mission UK, Global Ehsan Relief and Benny Appeal USA) for their generous support and all those working in the field for their efforts to deliver winter assistance to the beneficiaries to areas close to the lines of fronts.

 

From his side, Mohammed Al Hammadi, the field coordinator of the winter assistance project, stressed that winter assistance enabled the most needy people to cover their immediate needs, including obtaining 18 liters of cooking gas, warm clothes, blankets and food baskets, which would have a positive impact on their health and safety and alleviate their suffering during the harsh winter.

Yemen - Taiz: Islamic Help UK – Yemen Programme provided meat of sacrificial animals to over than 22,000 people in Taiz Governorate as part of its Eid Ul Adha campaign 1440. The total number of the sacrificial animals (Qurbani) that were delivered reached 161 cattle, including 45 cows and 116 sheep.
The project has targeted IDPs and the most vulnerable people in one of the most difficult accessible areas which is near to the frontlines of the ongoing war.
The Qurbani project focused particularly on the IPDs who displaced from the Western Coast of the Red Sea to Taiz Governorate whose military clashes forced them to leave their homes, animals and lands behind. Islamic Help also distributed Eid gifts and toys for the children of IDPs camps to make them happy and mitigate the psychological impact of the displacement.
Upon completion of the project, Country Director of Islamic Help UK; Dr. Jamal Al-Haddi thanked all donors (UK Islamic Mission, Global Ehsan Relief, Almanar Trust NZ and Panama Islamic Community), for their generous support and tremendous efforts to make Eid day a special day in the lives of those less privileged. And extending its wishes for the occasion of Eid Al Adha.

Taiz Islamic Help in collaboration with UK Islamic Mission has implemented 30 cows/bulls qurbani in Yemen 1440 – Taiz governorate which resulted in distribution of meat packs to 1,100 families that befitted more than 8,500 vulnerable people. Also, 900 cooked lunch meals were distributed to 300 vulnerable families live in the IDPs camp during Eid Aldha in Al-Turbah City in Taiz Governorate. Children of the IDPs camp were engaged with recreational activities were Eid gifts and distributed to them to make it joyful Eid and mitigate the psychological impact of the displacement.
For some people this was the only time of the year they were be able to enjoy a meal with meat and celebrate Eid since their displacement two years ago.

Part of an international programme and supported by the UNFPA – the United Nations Population Fund – Yemen office staged a series of workshops and activities in five governorates in Yemen (Sa’adah, AlJawf, Amran,Ibb and AlHudaidah) to raise awareness of issues like violence against women and children, child marriages, female genital mutilation, the lack of education due to social/gender exclusion and the targeting of women & children by armed groups.

Since 2015, nearly 15 percent of the entire population, 4.3 million people, have been forced to flee their homes; 3.3 million people are still displaced. More than 685,000 people
have been newly displaced in the past year, the majority by fighting in Hodeida and along the western coast. Close to 74 percent of displaced families outside hosting sites are living in rented accommodation; 22 percent are being hosted by families. Nearly 300,000 of the most destitute and vulnerable IDPs are living in 1,228 collective sites; 83 per cent of these sites have no health services, 39 percent report water deficits and 43 percent have no toilets. Nearly one-third of all IDPs live in the 104 districts across the country with the highest convergence of complex, multi-dimensional problems. Islamic Help UK – Yemen Programme works to mitigate the effect of displacement in more than 7 governorates in food security, healthcare services and WaSH.

Conditions are worsening at a nearly unprecedented rate. In 2014, prior to the conflict, 14.7 million people required assistance. In 2015, this number increased to 15.9 million; in 2016 to 21.2 million and in 2018 to 22.2 million. In 2019, 24.4 million people need assistance to survive. The number of severely food-insecure districts has risen by 60 percent in one year from 107 districts in 2018, to 190 in 2019. In the last 12 months, the number of people unable to predict when they will next eat has risen by 13 percent and is expected to increase by 20 percent or more unless humanitarian operations are dramatically expanded in the early months of 2019.
